Proprietary Conscious Consumer Research Inspires Fragrances with High EcoScent Compass™ Scores

Geneva, Switzerland January 29, 2019 – On the opening of the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) conference, Firmenich launches sustainable and traceable, “Scent for Good, Naturally”, fragrance collection. Combining proprietary consumer insights with leading EcoScent Compass™ sustainability scores, the market-specific fragrances offer world-class creativity with demonstrated positive social and environmental impact.

“Our perfumers need to fully understand the subtleties of consumers’ expectations when they express preferences for nature-inspired, transparent fragrances,” explained Armand de Villoutreys, President, Perfumery & Ingredients. “Speaking to more than 5,000 consumers across four key markets, our ‘Conscious Consumer’ research sheds light on important market differences across the perfumery, home care and personal care categories. For example, Brazilian millennials want biodegradable home care products, while Chinese consumers want locally recognizable natural scents in their dish detergent.”

“Combining our proprietary ‘Conscious Consumer’ insights with our industry-first EcoScent Compass™ sustainability measurement tool, our ‘Scent for Good, Naturally’ fragrances were designed to delight consumers, while building trust from field to scent,” said Paul Andersson, Senior Vice President, Perfumery, Body & Home Care.

Unique Preview of “Scent for Good, Naturally” Fragrance Collectio

Below are some examples of how Firmenich perfumers created three fragrances from the collection:

  • Biodegradable “Spa & Citrus” – 80% of Brazilians think it is vital or important for a laundry detergent-softener to be natural or eco-friendly. 64% of Brazilian Millennials believe eco-friendly home care products should be biodegradable. “Spa & Citrus” offers a 100% biodegradable fragrance that provides a cleansing breath of mandarin freshness with sparkling fruits and copahu oil, featuring responsibly sourced ingredients from our NaturalsTogether™ program. (EcoScent Compass™ score: A, B, A).

  • Natural “Balance & Tonka” – In France, more than anywhere else in the world, consumers say it is important or very important for deodorant to be natural or eco-friendly (82%). After recycling certification, the most known label is CosmosBio & EcoLabel. “Balance & Tonka” offers a 100% natural origin Cosmos Bio fragrance of smoky orange and vanilla that respects the planet. (EcoScent Compass™ score: A, C, B).

  • Natural “Harmony & Mandarin” – 91% of Chinese consumers expect recognizable natural smells, from fruits or flowers, in their dish detergent, and 51% want natural ingredients in the formula. “Harmony & Mandarin” provides a 100% natural origin and 100% biodegradable fragrance using traditional orange, jasmine and violet extracts that have no negative impact on the environment. (EcoScent Compass™ score: A, C, B).

With full results available in Fall 2019, the ‘Conscious Consumer’ research delivers insights for sustainable fragrances and flavors across fine fragrance, body and home care, and taste (food categories). The study includes Usage and Attitude research, Sniff & Taste experiences and Focus Groups findings across Brazil, China, France and the U.S.

The “Scent for Good, Naturally” concept collection is made possible by EcoScent Compass™. Launched in June 2018, EcoScent Compass™ is the industry’s first holistic fragrance sustainability measurement tool. Based on globally recognized metrics and guidelines (European Commission PEF, IFRA and WBCSD), EcoScent Compass™ determines a fragrance’s sustainability footprint across the following three criteria: intrinsic green properties, environmental and social impact. Each of the three pillars is represented by a score from A (highest) to E (lowest).
