Sourcing

Ginger has many harvest seasons, depending on the type. The ideal soil for cultivation is sandy or clay, red or lateritic loam. It thrives in humid climates and grows from sea level up to 1500 m.

Ginger is cultivated in different types of soils, provided sufficiently well distributed rainfall or irrigation and adequate drainage facilities are available. The ideal soil for ginger cultivation is sandy or clay loam or red loam or lateritic loam with good drainage and aeration. Ideal pH range of ginger is 5– 7.5. It grows well in humid climate and is cultivated from sea level up to an altitudes of about 1500 m above MSL. However, the optimum elevation for its successful cultivation is in the range of 300-900 m.

Nigeria

dsm-firmenich sources its Ginger from smallholder farmers in central and Southwestern Nigeria, where the crop is an important source of income for rural farmers - especially oil-quality dry ginger being sold by the farmers. Farmers harvest in December, either by hand or with a mechanical digger. It is sun-dried before being sent to a dsm-firmenich supplier for extraction.

India

dsm-firmenich sources its Ginger from India, in the Karnataka / Kerala region, where it vastly used for its culinary applications. It is hand-picked by local farmers. Rhizomes are lifted with a digging-fork or a spade, then dried in the sun for 2 weeks. Dried ginger can be stored for up to a year. Independent farmers cultivate and harvest the crop. Farmers harvest in December, either by hand or with a mechanical digger. It is sun-dried before being sent to a dsm-firmenich supplier for extraction. Sun-drying is widely practiced across India, a method done to effectively dehydrate Ginger at a low cost. Furthermore, oil-quality dry ginger being sold by farmers is an important source of income as a value addition for farmers.
