Firmenich is one of the largest buyers of Vanilla bean in the world, a critical and strategic raw material that Firmenich mainly sources from Madagascar, where 80% of the world production is coming from. Firmenich is partnering with one of the main actors of Vanilla in Madagascar, its #NaturalsTogether member and historical supplier for 10 years, to increase the sourcing sustainability. The responsible supply strategy relies on multiple actions on the ground, including direct support to a cooperative, created in SAVA area and supported by Firmenich and its partner for 8 years, and associations of farmers in Andapa. In the villages, achievements are numerous: drilling drinking water wells, constructing classrooms for a school…Farmers received trainings on best farming practices for vanilla and agriculture has been diversified with new cash crops providing additional revenue. Firmenich is also an active member of the Sustainable Vanilla Initiative (SVI), a voluntary industry initiative.
