PRESS RELEASE

FIRMENICH TACKLES GLOBAL SANITATION CRISIS WITH URGENCY

Geneva, Switzerland, January 23, 2017Building on the development of its breakthrough malodor counteracting technologies, Firmenich is committed to tackling today’s sanitation crisis with a sense of urgency. To learn more about Firmenich’s cutting-edge innovation, we invite you to watch The Firmenich Malodor Project, that documents the Group’s five-year journey to ‘Reinvent the Toilet Experience’ in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“Our vision is to make our breakthrough malodor control technologies reach the populations most in need through affordable and effective toilet cleaning and freshening products,” explains Gilbert Ghostine, Firmenich CEO. “By making the process of cleaning and using toilets more pleasurable and frequent, we can increase toilet usage. This in turn promises to help save the lives of 800,000 children that die each year from diseases caused by lack of hygiene.”

The Firmenich Malodor Project , highlights how Firmenich brought a multidisciplinary team of scientists together from Sensory and Cognitive Science to Receptor Biology in order to advance its expertise in malodor control. Throughout the project its experts conducted extensive fieldwork in cities and rural regions across India, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda, to confirm the performance of their findings. These years of research resulted in the discovery of breakthrough malodor counteracting technologies that eliminate the foul odor associated with toilets in a cost-effective and sustainable way. Building on this success, Firmenich, is working on a range of product prototypes such as bleach powders and other cleaning products, to test the effectiveness of its solutions in use across a range of applications.

As demonstrated by the very first Global Toilet Business Innovation and Investment Summit in Mumbai in November 2016, the world is on the brink of a new era of sanitation. Business leaders, together with health experts and pioneering sanipreneurs, are converging their efforts to solving the world’s sanitation crisis through sustainable and innovative business models and products. The coalition’s combined investment of USD 15 million will catalyze the growth of profitable sanitation solutions, transforming 125,000,000 lives, while also contributing to countries’ economic and social development.
