The resin of the liquidambar tree is sustainably collected by local producers. In the spring, tappers prepare the trees by incising the trunk. The sap is collected through summer. Raw Styrax gum is brought to local cooperatives for filtration, and distilled by our local suppliers.
Honduras
Native to Central America, Styrax is mainly produced in Honduras, where we purchase from our Joint Venture & Naturals Together Partner, Nelixia. Their philosophy is to sustainably produce products that are 100% traceable, while respecting their communities and the environment.
In El Paraíso region, farmers, grouped in a cooperative, mainly harvested pine and coffee until a disease stroke pine and decreased their income. As Styrax is already planted to provide shade for coffee, Nelixia and dsm-firmenich initiated a program on Styrax to guarantee market security and fair price, while ensuring quality and sustainable practices through training.
