Olfactive description

Soft but not sweet, with light animalic note and enhanced cinnamic effect. The Pyrogenation process sublimates the original note with an intense warm leathery effect and a radiant dry-down. Usually in Perfumery, the aim is to preserve top notes, freshness, and raw material fidelity. With the Pyrogenation, the target is opposite: heavy, pyrogenized and leathery notes are sought.

Perfumery usage

Known as a fixative, Styrax enhances compositions with chypre and ambery notes.
The VULCAIN range (Pyrogenized) is developed by dsm-firmenich Natural Ingredients Innovation Center and offers a collection of wider and more intense notes than those of the original extracts. They provide a technical solution in the range of leathery notes with a great olfactory potential, and thus a use at very low dosage.

Process

VULCAIN is the name of dsm-firmenich pyrogenation - A controlled and monitored creation of pyrogenized molecules during a specific heating process.

Sourcing

The resin of the liquidambar tree is sustainably collected by local producers. In the spring, tappers prepare the trees by incising the trunk. The sap is collected through summer. Raw Styrax gum is brought to local cooperatives for filtration, and distilled by our local suppliers.

Honduras

Native to Central America, Styrax is mainly produced in Honduras, where we purchase from our Joint Venture, Nelixia. Their philosophy is to sustainably produce products that are 100% traceable, while respecting their communities and the environment.
In El Paraíso region, farmers, grouped in a cooperative, mainly harvested pine and coffee until a disease stroke pine and decreased their income. As Styrax is already planted to provide shade for coffee, Nelixia and dsm-firmenich initiated a program on Styrax to guarantee market security and fair price, while ensuring quality and sustainable practices through training.
