Star anise is the seed pod from the fruit of an evergreen shrub native to Southwest China. It is most commonly grown in China, southeast Asia, and Japan.

Star Anise is harvested daily by hand. Farmers pick the ripe fruits, and then allow for sun drying process followed by a manual cleaning. Without any further treatment the materials undergo their processing.
