Nature gives us everything. It inspires our creations, supplies us with precious ingredients and drives our innovation.
We must use nature’s resources wisely to ensure they are available for future generations. Embracing nature and its fragile biodiversity all along our supply chain is essential.
Firmenich was an early adopter of green chemistry principles, first applying them with Paradisone® in 1998, and of industrial biotechnology with our first white biotech ingredient, Clearwood®, in 2014. Since 2010, our “Green Gate” ensures that our new ingredients have a low environmental impact in terms of biodegradability, non-bioaccumulation and non-toxicity for aquatic organisms.
Our white biotech ingredient, Dreamwood™ was developed using our in-house Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) due diligence process in line with the Nagoya Protocol.
We also put our expertise to work, as Vice-Chair of the Nagoya Protocol Task Force of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) and the International Organization of the Flavor Industry (IOFI), to create dedicated Flavor & Fragrance guidance on the Nagoya Protocol Principles.
In June 2021, we were proud to have achieved our renewed UEBT membership at the Group level. This acceptance is the result of a third-party assessment of our biodiversity policy commitments and responsible sourcing system in accordance with UEBT principles. We promote Regenerative Agriculture, as one of the 19 founding members of One Business for Biodiversity (OP2B), across our supply chain and product portfolios. We are an active participant in Science-Based Targets for Nature, because we strive for measurable progress on embracing nature.
Biodiversity is factored in to the way we work, from creation to production. We manufacture sustainable products sourced from nature. We also reduce the pressure on plant species that are in limited supply by designing and developing alternatives based on green chemistry and biotechnology from responsibly sourced biomass.
We prioritize and respect biodiversity in many ways:
