PRIORITIZING NATURE THROUGH GOOD GOVERNANCE
Complying With The Nagoya Protocol
Embracing Nature starts with the standards we demand of ourselves – and we have created dedicated governance processes to embed Nature.
Reflecting our holistic approach, we strongly support the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) (2010), we operationalize our commitments via dedicated governance, specific processes and unique programs. Our cross-divisional Biodiversity Steering Committee oversees integration of biodiversity across our businesses and focuses on two aspects that correspond to our main impacts on biodiversity: ABS due diligence and responsible sourcing.

Ensure Full ABS Execution
From our operations to our value chains, we integrate requirements related to biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. This step requires compliance with the Nagoya Protocol. Following the creation of our Biodiversity Steering Committee in 2017, we have expanded our internal expertise on ABS. As a result, Firmenich became the first company in the world to obtain a third-party audit of our ABS due diligence system.

Joint sectoral approach in South Africa on an endemic species
Parc National du Mercantour
We have obtained a benefit sharing agreement in France for our HeadSpace portfolio, valuing the exceptional flora of the Mercantour National Park in south-eastern France. In collaboration with the Park, and under the supervision of the French Ministry of Ecological Transition, we began in May 2021 to support activities that promote local and native biodiversity, including:
- Mapping of priority habitats
- Scientific studies on habitats, flora and fauna
- Habitats management projects for vulnerable species
As with many aspects related to our strategy, it is important for Firmenich to collaborate with credible partners. We are partnering with UEBT and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH via their BioInnovation Africa project. We also put our expertise to work, as Vice-Chair of the Nagoya Protocol task force of IFRA and IOFI, to continue strengthening Flavor & Fragrance guidance.
