Acting for Climate & the Environment

Leading the industry in climate, water and waste management

Urgent and concerted global action is needed to address climate change. We are acting to minimize our impact and aim to lead our industry towards zero carbon emission.

Firmenich is one of only six companies worldwide, out of more than 8,400 assessed and the only company in our industry, to achieve a triple ‘A’ score for climate change, water security and forests from CDP, the recognized global environmental disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions.

This world-class distinction recognizes our commitment to responsible business, supported by ambitious science-based targets and industry- leading environmental goals. In 2020, Firmenich reached 100% renewable electricity consumption, ahead of schedule, in all markets where it is possible to locally source renewable electricity - in accordance with strict technical criteria set by the RE100 initiative.

We made our first public environmental commitment three decades ago and, since then, our focus has been unwavering. We are making great inroads on our vision to be carbon neutral and move towards the circular economy.

Setting Science-based Targets aligned with 1.5°C

Firmenich is one of the founding members of “Business Ambition for 1.5°C” -  a coalition of more than 300  visionary companies committed to transition to a net-zero carbon emission future by 2050.

Firmenich has set its emissions reductions at levels prescribed by the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C (SR15) from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Our 2030 science based targets are a 55% reduction in our absolute Scope 1 & 2 emissions and a 20% reduction in our Scope 3 emissions from raw materials (all compared to 2017 levels).

Conserving water

As a member of the UN Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate since 2008, we strive to reduce critical water risks across our operations by conducting annual assessments and increasing water-use efficiency. We measure our water use and aim to reduce total consumption globally, particularly in more water-stressed areas. We set standards above minimum regulatory requirements based on local, national, and international laws.

Cutting waste

The way to a low-carbon economy is through sustainable production patterns that produce less waste. Besides our effort to reach zero manufacturing waste-to-landfill, we are also finding innovative ways to reduce our plastic footprint.

Despite the impact of COVID-19 on all countries in which we operate, our sites were still able to operate with zero manufacturing waste-to-landfill.
