REACHING CARBON NEUTRALITY
Commiting to Science-Based Targets
We initially committed to Science-Based Targets in 2017.
Firmenich’s science-based targets include a 55% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and a 90% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2039 vs. 2017.
We also aim to work with suppliers to help set their own science-based targets and reduce a majority of our Scope 3 footprint by 2039.

Progressing Towards Net Zero
We aim to reach carbon neutrality in our direct operations (Scope 1 & 2) by 2025 and be carbon positive beyond that.
In addition, we aim to reach net zero emissions in our direct operations and value chain (Scope 1, 2, & 3) before 2040.
In August 2022, we received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for our net-zero emissions target, making us the first company in the industry and one of the first companies globally to receive approval from the SBTi.

Reducing Value Chain Footprint
This past year, we updated our Scope 3 assessment to better represent the impact from our value chain. Since Scope 3 emissions account for approximately 97% of our total footprint, this presents a significant opportunity to reduce our impact.

By 2025, we aim for:
- 8% reduction in Scope 3 emissions from purchased raw materials vs. 2021
- 10% reduction in emissions rate from EG/IG outbound transportation vs. 2021
- 100% business travel and employee commuting emissions offset
Engaging our Suppliers
Our Responsible Sourcing Policy, Supplier Expectation Manual, and overarching Supplier Management and Collaboration program enable us to set precise requirements for our suppliers’ actions towards mitigating climate change, water scarcity, and deforestation.
By 2025, we aim for:
- 80% suppliers representing 80% of our raw materials spend to answer CDP Climate Change and set improvement plan
- 75% of our suppliers who respond to CDP Water to set reduction targets

Acting on Climate Change
Urgent and concerted global action is needed to address climate change. As such, we aim to lead our industry towards carbon neutrality in our direct operations by 2025 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2039.
